John is working on his next book. He's also wrestling with a part-time MA and preparing to ordain as a Theravadin Buddhist monk. The latter is temporary and a privilege offered each year to many thousands of lay adherents wherever the ancient Theravadin tradition is practised - mainly in Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It is also widely practised in Sri Lanka, but here ordination is normally for life. He also teaches writing skills, run workshops and deliver talks to schools, universities and prisons.
